The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced the National Eligibility Test (NET) for determining the eligibility of post-graduate students for an appointment at the posts of Assistant Professor in the Indian Universities/colleges. The exam score is also considered for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). On behalf of UGC, the National Testing Agency will conduct the exam from December 2018 session. Till July 2018 session, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) used to conduct the UGC NET exam.
Candidates who qualify the UGC NET exam are awarded an e-certificate. The University Grants Commission issues the certificate to appreciate the successful candidates. This certificate is a proof that the candidates have qualified the NET exam. The certificate is made available on the UGC NET ONLINE website within 1 or 2 months after the exam. Earlier, the certificates were issued in 8 to 9 months. However, the HRD ministry has now started an e-portal to issue the certificate within a month of result declaration. The certificate contains the digital signature/seal of UGC and is completely genuine.
The certificate for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) remains valid for 3 years while the certificate for Lectureship has no validity limit.
